Dog satiety: how to stimulate it?

All dog owners can tell when their pet is hungry or wants to get food and tries every way to get attention to make us understand that it meal time. While you are cooking or eating, dogs often try to get noticed: by barking or whining, keeping turning on itself and looking for physical contact. These small routines and normal habits are part of the everyday life of those who live with a dog, and that’s what makes life with them funny and special.

However it is very important to distinguish the dog’s hunger from its greediness, to provide the adequate and balanced diet. In fact, dogs are greedy by nature, because given the scarcity and insecurity of the food their ancestors were used to deal with, they maintained the habit of eating whatever is available at the moment. For the same reason, dogs don’t stop when they are full, but they prefer to stock up on food when it is available.

Evaluating their sense of hunger you should consider dog health and physical status according to some features that modify their nutritional requirements such as age, their daily physical activity and any cases of illness or convalescence.

Regardless of dog’s appetite, it is good to follow objective parameters and tips: respect the quantities of food indicated directly in on the feed packages or ask experts if you feed home-cooked food. Moreover, it is good to take care of the daily calories ingested, which must be constant not to have repercussions on the metabolism and digestion and also to avoid caloric decifit or surplus that can have consequences in the long term.

Preferring more protein-rich and less fatty foods, which satiate faster and help stay in shape. It is good to pay attention also to the meals that are given to the dog: rewards and snacks must be of the right quantity and quality.

To curb dog’s voracity some tricks can be adopted: divide meals during the day and avoid to feed once a day, prefer dry foods that stimulate salivation and a long chewing, essential steps for the satiety.

Furthermore, it is good to go for fiber-rich foods such as cereals and in certain types of fruit and vegetables, since they have a wide satiating power, are slowly digested and keep the digestive system healthy. The type of selected fibers must be high-quality to enhance their properties: prefer whole grains and delicately processed fruits and vegetables, such as steam-cooked ones, without artificial additives such as preservatives, colorings and flavorings. Diet Flakes ensures all these properties and replacing it by 10-25% to the usually consumed food guarantees the adequate dose of daily fibers.

If your dog keeps thinking about food and attracting your attention, try to distract him with mentally-busy activities, play with him, go for a walk, brush him and pamper him. Spending time with your dog is with a balanced nutrition, another way to take care of its health.
