Barf Diet: which are its grounds?

The BARF diet has been developed by the Australian veterinarian Ian Billinghurst and its acronym stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. The diet, initially developed for dog’s nutrition, was then adjusted for many pets, firstly for cat.

The foundation of this regime is the belief that our pet ancestors have eaten for millions of years raw meat, bones and offal of the numerous different prey they can catch. Therefore the supporters of this feeding method are convinced that feeding their pets according to this nutritional regime, is the best choice for their digestive system, which has developed with these wildlife habits.

The advantages on the health of the animals that are thought to be connected to BARF diet are many: shining and brighter fur, healthy and clean teeth, fresher breath, more vitality and energy, better physical shape and greater palatability for the animal. There are also some objections to this diet, such as the risk of poisoning with not correctly preserved raw meat, risks of ingesting bone fragments and a hypothetical aggression increase.

But what are the foods suggested by this nutritional regime?

There are different type of the BARF diet depending on the pet and the different food percentages. Anyway the BARF diet suggests  a main portion of meat from muscle tissues, followed by meat with soft bones rich in cartilage, different kind of offal, fruit and vegetables and other foods such as dairy products, eggs, fish and seeds. All rigorously raw.

Approaching the BARF diet may seem difficult and complex. The golden rules to follow are:

  • Rely on your veterinarian for a personalized diet for your pet needs
  • Choose quality foods and preserve them properly
  • Introduce the BARF diet gradually into your pet nutrition
