Which is the right dog snack?
Using a reward to train a dog is very common to get him follow some simple orders or get a behaviors, although the choice of the right reward is far from being simple.
First of all it is possible to distinguish four group of rewards: food rewards, verbal gratification, cuddles and play time. Great adjustment and freedom are possible in all this kind of rewards according to the training method and purpose, the dog habits and its preferences. The food is the most powerful and easy reward to apply and so the most used, however it is really important to properly choose right dog snack and treats among the many on the market to avoid nutritional problems.
So, how to choose the right dog snack?
The treats has obviously to be tasty to the dog, to provide a good incentive to run the exercise. The reward has not to be too big even for big dogs, since in a training session the treats eaten are many and also the treats don’t have to sate your pet and drive him to skip the main meal consequentially lead to possible nutritional unbalances. To avoid this problem treats or snack should be light: tasty but hypocaloric and therefore you should evaluate the ingredients list choosing products without added sugars, which are harmful for dogs and also without by-products. Even better if the treats does not contains meats at all to avoid a too high daily protein intake. Another reason to prefer meat-free snacks is meat-allergy or intolerance, since many dog suffer from this especially for the use of artificial additives commonly used when meat is an ingredients.
The reward has be easily digestible because a dog eats more snacks during a training session and since often pups are constantly trained and so they need tasty but light treats being digestive-sensitive. Smell is also important on a snack, especially when training involves the sense of smell, this should be quite strong to let the dog find easily the treats.
